Classic holiday cheer
Glühwein is a beloved mulled wine served at Christkindl markets throughout Austria. This version uses Zweigelt, a popular Austrian red, to bring depth and authenticity. Aged rum adds body and nutty orange notes, elevating a festive favorite into an even more delightful holiday indulgence.
Ingredients
metric standard90 ml zweigelt (or substitute zinfandel)
15 ml aged rum
10 ml allspice dram
15 ml cinnamon syrup
2 dashes aromatic bitters
90-120 ml hot water
Orange slice (garnish)
Torched cinnamon stick (garnish)
Preparation
Combine all ingredients in a mug, except hot water, and stir. Add hot water as the last ingredient. Garnish with an orange slice and a torched cinnamon stick (carefully char one end with a kitchen torch until it starts to smoke).
For cinnamon syrup, toast 25 g of cinnamon sticks in a pot for 2 minutes. Once aromatic, add 1 l of water and 1 l of white granulated sugar and cook on medium heat. Once boiling, turn down to low and let simmer for 30 minutes. Strain out the whole cinnamon sticks and let cool before use.
